The Burlington!
Ahhh, what can I say about the Burlington? I love going there. It’s down the street from my apartment, it’s cozy without being sloppy, it’s hip without being snobby, they have great specials (whiskey shot and a PBR for $5, my favorite combo), and great music.
The Burlington was opened by brothers Greg and Chris who lived just around the corner...
Viva El Cid
There’s nothing better than getting food and drinks outside in the Chicago summer. El Cid is the perfect place for such adventures. But don’t take our word for it: ask the Reader:
A late-night oasis in Logan Square, El Cid produces solid traditional platters that regulars swear by (and they swear louder when the management is handing out shots of tequila).
There’s musica en vivo...

The Shams Band
In an already flooded valley of self-labeled folk-rock outfits, The Shams Band is the dirt—the levy that stays true to form against a flood of watered down acts. With heavy doses of rockabilly and a juke-joint prowess, The Shams Band draw from folk, blues, and country influences to create a sound that is unmistakably of the Midwest. From the lazy...

It’s been a hell of a summer for Jon Drake and The Shakes. Kicking it off with a late spring European excursion that brought their folksy union of sweat-drenched American pop to eager audiences in France, The Shakes returned stateside with several open-air outings on the Chicago street festival circuit, including stops at the Taste of Chicago, Northalsted Market Days,...

The Hairpin Building: In Case You Didn't Know
The building on the north west corner of Milwaukee, Diversey and Kimball has quite a history… nothing too exciting; it has mostly been inhabited by men’s clothiers since it was built but it’s story is about to enter Logan Square’s gentrification history (no positive or negative connotation here, totally neutral). It will soon be rehabbed after what I hear has been 20 years...

Fuck Yeah Chicago!!: Save Wrigleyville →
— we just signed the petition and you should too! http://www.savewrigleyville.org/save-wrigleyville-petition.php —
I’m sure as a Chicagoan you know that Wrigleville is under threat of being torn up and parts of it becoming a mini mall. Improv Olympic is one of the places that would be torn…
(I know this isn’t directly relating to Logan Square per say - but it does seem kind of...

Book club? Cool.
Some of my Logan Square friends have book clubs, but I can never seem to read a book on other people’s schedules, so I haven’t joined them, as much as I would like to. Today, I stumbled on a listing on the library’s website that said there is a book club affiliated with the Logan Square Library and Weegee’s (a bar I have heard I would love but haven’t made it over...

Guerrilla Gardening in Logan Square?
You’ve all probably heard of it by now but just in case, guerrilla gardening is an organized or unorganized act of “vandalism” (???) where by people plant flowers in places not owned by them. Obviously, most people don’t mind this. Guerrilla gardening kinda falls into that sort of punk/D.I.Y./activism shady area where it can be an organized group or individual that plants...
Logan Square is lucky to have a community-owned grocery store that supplies fresh, local, and organic products. It has your everyday needs including a great bulk section.
The Dill Pickle is a Co-op grocery store. Which essentially means that it is owned and operated by the community. Which is really cool. It means that every member-owner can have a voice in the choices the grocery makes when...

Palmer Square
Palmer Square sometimes gets forgotten with the Kedzie and Logan Boulevards being so centrally located to Logan Square itself. Palmer Square, the area, not the park, is considered a neighborhood within a neighborhood, but it certainly could stand on its own. It’s actually a “pocket neighborhood,” characterized by high density residences surrounding a park or public space that...

First Things First, and Timely Indeed
For this, the very first post, I thought I’d start with the the most basic part of Logan Square’s origin story. Our name.
Did you ever wonder who Logan Square was named after? No, it wasn’t a Native American, this isn’t Minnesota. It was this guy:
General John A Logan. Handsome devil, isn’t he? Funny that a decent percentage of the current male residents share...
